Motorcycle Helmets - No debate here - the Basic Rider Course
highly recommends you where a helmet. We do too. But first lets get
the facts. There's no doubt about it helmets may save your butt.
Statistics can be used both ways, but the fact is its just smart to
wear one, pros use helmets
and they fit them correctly.
Hearing and vision - Do motorcycle helmets impede hearing
and vision? Well of course they do. In Florida the driver of a car
is not allowed to wear a helmet by law, for just those reasons. BUT,
the benefits of wearing a motorcycle helmet far exceed the cons. If
you purchase a motorcycle helmet that blocks some horizontal peripheral vision,
simple turn your head. Wind noise at about 30 mph can be a
problem. Minimizes wind noise - Pick a helmet that has minimal
wind noise and fit it correctly. Some riders use ear plugs, but using
earplugs may reduce one of your valuable survival senses. High levels of noise are
can be stressful and can cause a loss of concentration, and the noise can quickly and permanently damage your hearing.
So the best bet is to wear a helmet that doesn't have a lot of wind
noice - check reviews of helmets. If you already purchased a helmet
and can't take the noise, consider a product like the "Windjammer
II", designed to reduce wind noise. Hopefully you're adults.
We're not going to lie to you with the "have you heard the myths
about motorcycle helmets line. Without a helmet, you're asking for
trouble. You wear a helmet, because no matter how much your
friends and family love you, at some point they are going to get
tired of changing your diaper.
For the purposes of the Basic Rider Course "test Question" the
number one cause of fatalities on a motorcycle is head injuries. NHSTA
stats show that most motorcycle fatalities are caused by hitting a
fixed object, and this causes multiple injuries to the entire body.
But your head may come out ok, if you are wearing a helmet. But
brain damage doesn't always kill you, sometimes it hurts your
friends and family the most!
Why a helmet all the time?
(Not wearing a helmet is kind of like smoking, it may
not get ya right away, it may never get ya, but somewhere down the
road it may reach out and touch ya.)
Ever heard someone say, "$100.00 head, $100.00 helmet"? Well that
may be a good saying, but does a cheap helmet work just as good as
that $500.00 helmet -

Make sure the motorcycle helmet is certified by DOT or
SNELL. This means it has passed at least the basic safety
requirements of the Department of Transportation (DOT), or the SNELL
Foundation. Helmet manufacturers put the DOT or the SNELL sticker on a helmet. Some helmets are Snell certified, which means they meet the standards of the Snell Memorial Foundation, which has been testing helmets since the 1950s.
DOT will do just fine.
Florida Helmet Law: "If you are 21
years old and covered by an insurance policy with at least $10,000
in medical benefits you can get a Helmet exemption. Note that law
enforcement may stop you if you are not wearing a helmet and they
believe you are under 21.".... Florida DMV
