Leather motorcycle jackets offer the best protection against
road rash. That said, not all leather jackets are equal. The
protective quality of a good leather motorcycle jacket, is radically better than a fashion motorcycle
jacket. Good protective leather motorcycle jackets have armor in the elbows, forearms, shoulders, and the back
are better. A good quality leather jacket is also double or triple-stitched along the seams.
What's the drawbacks with leather? They get get wet and can shrink . They are
heavy, and
unless ventilated with removable liners leather is awfully hot in the warmer months.
They cost an arm and a leg for a good one. Without armor they only
provide road rash protection, get a good one. Tip: If you decide to
water proof your leather jacket, Look for products specifically designed for leather which do not contain waxes and oils that will clog the leather. You can waterproof and protect your leather
gear with mink oil or silicone spray. Do not use Neatsfoot oil, it
can cause stitching to rot
Textile
motorcycle jackets are a lot easier to clean, they are lighter, and
much cheaper. Textile is more adjustable and has lots of pockets. Textile has an all weather capability: vents for when it is warm, liners for when it is cold and water
resistant. It breathes more easily than leather, and water slides off it like a ducks back.
Textile jackets come with armor also. Textile jackets tend to be
disposable. One good slide and they are done, but they served their
purpose - solution? Don't go sliding down the highway the first
time. It is undisputable - a good leather motorcycle jacket
offers better protection while sliding down the road. You can
usually purchase matching riding pants (armored) to match a textile
jacket. If you are in Central Florida run down to The Helmet shop at 546 Ballough Road Daytona Beach, FL and take a look and compare prices. |
