MSF may add Smarttrainer to course

The MSF is considering adding Honda's "SmartTrainer" to the MSF course.
Buche called the SMARTrainer, €ŒThe right tool at the right time,€ and described how MSF has taken the training tool
and created supplemental Rider Education and Training System (RETS) learning opportunities that can be tailored
to meet the needs of students at any RETS level: Learn to Ride, Return to Riding, or Ride Better. He emphasized that the SMARTrainer is not a substitute for traditional training, but that, €ŒÂ€¦ [by] applying contemporary techniques and a theory-driven curriculumdevelopment approach to the SMARTrainer effort, the Motorcycle
Safety Foundation has transformed this sophisticated tool into an essential and effective element of a comprehensive
Rider Education and Training System.

The Honda SMART is a traffic simulator specifically designed to give riders a safe bridge between a typical beginning
riding course (which often take place in a parking lot) and the real-world scenario of riding in traffic and on public
roads." Part of their original success during the motorcycle boon of the €™70s was born out of helping introduce new riders to the joys of motorcycling by producing a line of smaller, less intimidating machines than the competition. As a result, there has always been a residual element of safety that has commodating nascent riders, Honda has developed the SMART (Safe Motorcyclist Awareness and Recognition Trainer), also known as the SMARTrainer The Honda SMARTrainer traffic simulator is the latest tool in helping riders develop defensive riding skills. The SMART has motorcycle controls to put the operator directly in the rider seat - literally. Honda's proprietary software
presents the rider with a multitude of traffic scenarios. The SMART is a highly effective tool to help beginning
riders €“ as well as returning riders who need a mental tuneup. The Honda SMART is a traffic simulator specifically designed to give riders a safe bridge between a typical beginning riding course (which often take place in a parking lot) and the real-world scenario of riding in traffic and on public roads. The key is in providing a no-risk Introduction to the hazards of street riding to compliment rudimentary instruction. In this day and age of video games, it€™s important to point out that the device is not a riding simulator and there is no articulated movement. However, what the SMART lacks in actual physical riding sensation, it more than makes up for in providing an effective tool for rider education.

The Honda SMART Trainer or Safe Motorcyclist Awareness and Recognition Trainer is a computerized traffic simulator that allows beginning riders the opportunity to operate a motorcycle in real life situations without the real world consequences.

The Honda SMART Trainer uses state of the art software and actual Honda motorcycle controls to give the rider an opportunity to learn basic motorcycle control operations such as clutch, brake, throttle, and gearshift coordination in a computer simulation environment. It also offers intermediate or experienced riders the opportunity to operate in more risky traffic situations giving them a chance to evaluate and address the various safety scenarios in a controlled environment. The Honda SMART Device simulates 17 different riding scenarios. Two of the scenarios are for beginning riders: Clutch Operation & City Riding. The remaining 15 scenarios are hazard prediction courses testing the riders accident avoidance and prediction skills. Each of these scenarios can be run in 3 different modes: Day, Night, & Fog. In addition the Honda SMART Device offeres the rider a choice of operating a standard Manual Shift motorcycle or an Automatic scooter. In total the SMART Device offers 164 different operating scenarios, giving the rider many chances to get it wrong in simulation, but not in real life. With many different scenarios and real-life controls, the Honda SMART Device offers riders invaluable training in a structured environment.

Students will receive 20 minutes on the S.M.A.R.T. Device and 10 minutes of review with this course.
